Fuel Oil
Fuel oil is a fraction produced during the distillation of petroleum, either as a residue or a distillate. In general, fuel oil is any liquid petroleum product that is used in an engine to produce power or is burned in a furnace or boiler to produce heat, with the exception of oils with flash points below 40 °C (104 °F) and those used in cotton- or wool-wick burners.
In a stricter meaning, the word “fuel oil” only refers to the heaviest commercial fuel that can be produced from crude oil, i.e., fuel that is heavier than petrol and naphtha.
Six fuel oil requirements are identified by the ASTM classification system, which was initially based on early refining and combustion engineering practises and terminology. There are various definitions, though.
Increases in the fuel oil number correspond to longer carbon chains, higher boiling points, and heavier viscosities. Price typically drops as the quantity of fuel rises.
Bunker Fuels
Bunker fuels are also a type of fuel oil, used aboard ships. Bunker fuel is often used as a synonym for No. 6 fuel oil which is the most common bunker fuel.
Marine Fuels
Other types of classification used in the maritime field also include :
Marine fuels are often quoted on the international bunker markets with their maximum viscosity (which is set by the ISO 8217 standard) due to the fact that marine engines are designed to use different viscosities of fuel. The unit of viscosity used is the Centistoke and the fuels most frequently quoted are listed below in order of cost, the least expensive first :
